- Prepare a Budget. You will want to make a list of all of your monthly expenses which could include-current rent or mortgage, car payments, utilities, school loans and any other loan payments. Don’t forget to add food, entertainment and any childcare expenses.
- List your debts. Any credit card debt, as well as any other debt that requires regular monthly payments.
- Get Pre-Approved. Once you have your finances in order, you will want to get pre-approved before you start shopping for a home, so you know what price range you need to be in. You don’t want to fall in love with a home you can’t get afford or get a mortgage for.
- Make a list of wants and needs. You can share this list with your Realtor once you have an idea, and everybody would be on the same page when you start looking for a home.
- Find a Realtor. That Realtor will work with YOU and will put your interests first. You will want to find a Realtor who is committed to meeting your needs, and who knows the areas and price range of the new home you are wanting to purchase.
- Ask questions. When talking to prospective Realtors, don’t be afraid to ask questions about their business.
Buying a home could possibly be the single most important decision you will make. If you do your homework and prepare, it can be a very rewarding and fun experience!
